Individual Counselling

A one-to-one space to understand yourself and move forward at your pace.

Two armchairs in a calm room for individual counselling

Individual counselling is a one-to-one space to explore what you’re experiencing, understand recurring patterns and work through personal challenges at your own pace.

Sessions can focus on emotional difficulties, relationships, self-esteem, life transitions, anxiety, stress, or simply developing a deeper understanding of yourself. Together, we work towards practical change while also exploring the thoughts, emotions and patterns underneath them.

What individual counselling can help with

You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to start. Many people begin individual counselling because something feels heavier than it should, or because they want to understand themselves better. Common reasons include:

  • Anxiety and stress that keep your mind busy and your body tense
  • Relationships with partners, family, friends or colleagues that feel confusing or painful
  • Low self-esteem and a harsh inner critic
  • Life transitions such as moving countries, changing careers, endings and new beginnings
  • Emotional overwhelm, numbness or feelings that are hard to name
  • Repeating patterns you notice but cannot seem to change
  • Self-discovery and personal growth when nothing is wrong, but you want more

How individual counselling sessions work

Every journey starts with a first session where we get to know each other. You share what brings you here, I ask a few questions, and we talk about what you hope will be different. There is no pressure to tell everything at once.

From there, sessions follow what matters most to you that week. Sometimes we focus on a specific situation and practical next steps. Sometimes we slow down and explore the feelings and memories underneath. Over time, the patterns start to make sense, and that understanding is what makes lasting change possible.

What a session might include

  • Talking through what happened since we last met
  • Noticing links between thoughts, emotions and behaviours, drawing on CBT
  • Exploring how past experiences shape the present, from a psychodynamic view
  • Small, practical experiments to try between sessions
  • Space to simply be heard, without needing to fix anything

Therapy is not about changing who you are. It is about understanding yourself more deeply and discovering new ways of moving forward.

Is individual counselling right for me?

Individual counselling suits you if you want ongoing, flexible support rather than a fixed programme. It works well when several things feel tangled together, or when you are not yet sure what the real issue is. If you already know you want to work on one theme, one of the focused packages may suit you better:

Research consistently finds that the relationship between client and counsellor is one of the strongest predictors of good outcomes in talking therapy, as summarised by the American Psychological Association. That is why the first session matters: it is a chance for you to see whether working together feels right.

What a typical journey looks like

Every person is different, but many journeys follow a similar shape. The first few sessions are about settling in. You tell your story, we notice what keeps coming up, and you begin to feel what it is like to be listened to without judgement. That alone often brings some relief.

In the middle phase, the work deepens. We connect the dots between situations that seemed unrelated, try out new responses, and talk honestly about what is shifting and what isn’t. Some weeks feel like big steps forward. Others feel quiet. Both are part of the process.

Towards the end, we look back at how far you have come and put together what you want to carry forward. Ending is planned together, never sudden, and the door stays open if you want to return later.

Questions people often ask

Do I need to know what to talk about?

No. Many people arrive saying “I don’t know where to start”. That is a perfectly good place to start. I will help you find the thread.

What if I cry, or feel nothing at all?

Both are welcome. There is no right way to feel in a session. Tears, silence, laughter and confusion all have a place here.

Will you give me homework?

Only if it helps you. Some people like small exercises between sessions, others prefer to simply reflect. We decide together.

Can I bring something different each week?

Yes. Life changes week to week, and sessions can follow what feels most important on the day.

Practical details

Sessions are one-to-one and confidential. Frequency is agreed together. Weekly sessions are common at the start, and many people move to every two weeks as things settle. You can pause or stop at any time. For fees, session length and cancellation details, see the FAQ or the terms and conditions.
